“The first documentation of social statistical concepts originated in the 1600s as published discussions on probability and normal curve equations” (Fienberg, 1992).An important case in point is the Framingham Heart Study, which was launched in 1948. This study aimed to identify the common factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease. Over 5,000 participants were recruited and their health patterns, behaviors, and medical histories were closely monitored for several decades (Mahmood et al., 2014). Through rigorous statistical analysis, the study identified several key risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and physical inactivity (Mahmood et al., 2014). The findings led to a shift in how heart disease is prevented and treated. The incorporation of statistics into health care has historically acted as a bedrock for some of the most significant advancements in the field. The Framingham Heart Study stands as a testament to the power of statistics in shaping our understanding of diseases and informing best practices in health care.
