Advocacy is important in the world of nursing. Often like we forget about self-care; we forget to advocate for ourselves. Advocating for ourselves as a workforce can have rewarding benefits like better healthcare laws for nurses that ensure our safety and better working conditions. The International Council of Nurses works with one goal and allows nurses to use their voices as one to try and change health policy and advance nursing (Helbig, 2022). Nurses work as part of an interdisciplinary team in various healthcare settings and nurses also serve as political leaders at different levels of politics, so it is in the nurse’s favor to advocate (Helbig, 2022).
The American Nurses Association (ANA) says advocacy is a pilar of nursing (The American Nurses Association [ANA], n.d.) The ANA upholds its promise to help nurses’ wellbeing, for positive patient outcomes and happier nurses (ANA, n.d.). Nurses dedicate their lives to being the best providers for their patients. Nurses would not be able to provide the care they do without the help from nursing organizations, other nurses, and legislature (ANA, n.d.). The ANA keeps current with health care to help nurses succeed and deliver quality care (ANA, n.d.). Nurses are encouraged to work to the full extent of their education due to various problems in health care (ANA, n.d.). Nursing is about advocating for your patients, but also being able to see the importance of advocating for the profession. In turn advocating for the profession increases positivity around the workplace and with patient care.
