Answer 3 for NRS 430 Discuss the importance of advocacy as it pertains to client care
One of the many things that caught my attention from the video was the part about being mentors to new nurses, and always being teachers and learners (Elders, 2018). After my experience of coming into an unknown field and being a brand-new nurse and experiencing the bullying and abuse I endured the first 3 months of my career, mentoring new nurses has become something I am extremely passionate about. Those first few months in nursing are so critical and the new graduate nurses are so very vulnerable at that time of their careers. It costs absolutely nothing to be kind to someone and it amazed me that the “nurses” trained to care for sick and dying patients were the same ones mistreating new nurses. I never want another nurse to feel the things I felt, and question if going through nursing school was even the right decision after driving home in tears, from 12-hour shifts that were filled with snarky, cruel, abusive remarks from the nurses getting paid to train the new nurses. In the field of nursing that is always evolving and changing, there is something new to learn and teach others. I never want to reach a complacency in my career, that I feel I’ve learned everything I need to know. I want to continue to grow, learn, mentor and teach others. Especially new nurses, those stand out to me the most, because if they can learn, grow and begin those first steps of their nursing career in a safe, nurturing environment with kind nurses, I believe those new nurses will grow into strong confident nurses of the future.
