The concept of health has shifted from the management of diseases to disease prevention and health promotion (Faulkner et Al, 2022). Health in the early nineteenth century was compromised of widespread disease rather than prevention of illness. Once proper sanitation efforts became instituted and administration of vaccinations became available to the public in the twentieth century disease prevention became a precedence (Faulkner et al, 2022). The World Health Organization defines health as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Health today focuses more on a holistic individualistic approach which centers around prevention and adopting choices to promote over all wellness that embodies physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. With the collective efforts of health care facilities, providers and federal agencies forming healthier population is the overall goal (Faulkner et al, 2022). Health promotion has become increasingly important as it focuses on strategic interventions aimed at improving an individual’s health and preventing illness to live longer, more fulfilling healthier lives.
Nursing plays a critical role in implementing evidenced based practice to promote and heal illness as our profession is the forefront and heart of healthcare. Evidenced based practice encompasses the essential tools we as health care professionals require to successfully find new and better ways of treating patients or in contrast using data to prove an old avenue of treatment should be in effect rather than altered. EVB is proven to be the most essential method in nursing to ensure the profession is staying up to date with clinical interventions allowing for optimal client care outcomes. EVB also lowers healthcare cost and reduces hospitalizations and illness, making it vital to incorporate into health promotion to continue efforts in disease prevention (Faulkner et al, 2022). In conclusion, healthcare may be ever evolving and advancing however the nursing profession remains at its core a patient advocate, making promotion of health using evidenced based practices and delivering health education a vital priority in today world to promote wellness and prevent disease.
