National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies
The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) is an agency that aims to provide a roadmap for nurse practitioners as they transition to the observable behavioral assessments associated with competency-based educational models (NONPF.org, n.d.). The NONPF has identified nine competency areas guiding all nurses regardless of their specialty. These competencies are scientific foundations, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery systems, ethics, and independent practice. This essay explores how the MSN program has prepared me to meet each competency area, social change engagement, and advocacy activities in which my state nurse practitioner organizations are involved.
MSN PMHNP in Meeting the NONPF Competencies
Scientific Foundation
The competency area ensures nurses can analyze data and evidence for improving advanced nursing practice, integrate knowledge from other disciplines related to nursing, and translate research. The MSN PMHNP program has deepened my understanding of psychiatric science, advanced pharmacology, and neuroscience, enabling me to apply evidence-based research to patient care. For example, I have learned to assess and integrate current studies on psychotropic medications into treatment plans throughout my courses.
Leadership
Nurses are expected to assume complex leadership roles using critical and reflective thinking and advocate for improved access to quality, cost-effective care. The course offered me leadership training that allowed me to advocate for mental health policies and improve mental health access within clinical settings. For example, I have been able to participate in mental health policy discussions, advocating for reduced barriers to care for underserved populations.
Quality
Quality competencies stipulate that nurses use available evidence to improve clinical practice quality, evaluate organizational structures and their impact on healthcare quality, and apply peer review skills to promote a culture of excellence. The program emphasizes quality improvement methods that directly impact patient outcomes. I have learned and practiced implementing quality improvement projects to enhance patient satisfaction in psychiatric services or reduce readmission rates. I have also learned to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to enhance care quality by preventing duplication of efforts.
Practice Inquiry
Practice inquiry competencies ensure nurses apply clinical investigative skills to improve outcomes and can disseminate evidence from inquiry to diverse audiences using different modalities. Through the program activities and research, I have learned to evaluate and translate evidence into practice, helping me use inquiry to enhance mental health practices. Additionally, I have experienced patient management, including discerning gaps in care and barriers to care that needed resolution during patient encounters throughout my practicum experiences. I have also participated in quality improvement project implementation in my practicum experience.
Technology and Information Literacy
The technology and information literacy competencies require nurses to integrate appropriate technologies to manage knowledge, improve healthcare, and demonstrate information literacy skills in complex decision-making. The program has enabled me to achieve these competencies by offering training in electronic health records (EHR) and other digital tools, making me adept at managing patient information and protecting privacy. I have also interacted with technologies available to support patient education in my practicum experience, including using telehealth to deliver mental health care. I have also developed skills to navigate EHR systems efficiently, which helps in tracking patient progress and coordinating care in my practice setting.
Policy
The MHNP program has provided me with skills and knowledge on the policy analysis process, health policy, healthcare reforms, and legislative and regulatory processes, and also introduced me to global issues related to psychiatric and mental health. Particularly, the course on healthcare policy gave me the tools to understand and impact healthcare laws affecting mental health practice. I also engaged in activities such as writing a policy brief on mental health parity or discussing the implications of policy changes on patient access to psychiatric care.
Health Delivery System
The competencies of health delivery systems require nurses to understand the complex healthcare system and be able to navigate and develop healthcare systems of culturally diverse populations, providers, and other stakeholders. The program has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of healthcare systems and the impact of social determinants of health on mental health. Additionally, I developed strategies to address gaps in care coordination for patients receiving mental health care through telehealth in my practicum.
Ethics
Ethics competencies ensure that nurses integrate ethical principles in decision-making, evaluate the ethical consequences of decisions, and apply ethically sound solutions to complex issues related to individuals, populations, and care systems. The program training has prepared me to navigate complex scenarios and maintain ethical principles in mental health practice, such as managing confidentiality and informed consent in cases where patients are severely ill. The course assignments and practicum experience enabled me to participate in cases and case studies that challenged me to consider the ethical implications of various decisions in psychiatric treatment.
Independent Practice
By the end of the MSN PMHN program, a nurse is expected to be prepared to function as a licensed independent practitioner. The program entailed clinical rotations that provided me with real-world experience in assessing, diagnosing, and managing mental health conditions independently while also working under preceptor supervision. I conducted initial patient interviews, formulated diagnoses, and developed treatment plans, demonstrating my growing autonomy and contributing to my readiness to practice independently.
Social Change Engagement
I intend to drive social change in my community as a PMHNP by addressing mental health disparities among underserved and minority populations in my community. I will strive to make psychiatric and mental health care services available and accessible for all by joining independent practice. Additionally, I will provide culturally competent mental health care and ensure I mobilize other psychiatric and mental health practitioners to reduce mental health stigma. My approach entails participating in and creating community outreach programs to increase mental health care access and anti-stigma campaigns to address mental health stigma. Moreover, I will collaborate with other care providers and organizations to extend mental health services to all populations in my community.
Legislative and Advocacy Activities
As a member of the Delaware Coalition for Nurse Practitioners, I am aware of various advocacy activities in which the organization is currently involved. One of them is advocacy for workforce development initiatives. The organization is involved in securing state funding and support for programs that increase the nursing workforce, such as advocating for scholarships, loan forgiveness programs, and residency programs that encourage newly trained NPs to practice in Delaware, particularly in high-need areas.
Delaware NPs also advocate for permanent telehealth expansion laws to enable more patients to access healthcare remotely. DCNP and other local organizations are working to ensure these provisions become permanent, allowing PMHNPs to continue offering virtual mental health services to patients who may face barriers in visiting in-person clinics, such as those in rural or underserved regions.
Conclusion
The MSN PMHNP program has helped me develop the skills necessary to meet the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) competencies, which guide advanced practice nursing education. Each of these competencies is critical to my role as a PMHNP, enabling me to provide comprehensive, high-quality psychiatric care that meets the diverse needs of my patients, as seen above. The advocacy efforts of Delaware nurse practitioners aim to create a more inclusive and accessible healthcare environment, benefiting both providers and diverse communities.
